OET for Egyptian Nurses: NMC Registration and UK Pathway (2026)

Egypt produces a large number of nurses each year and is a long-established source country for both NHS and Gulf recruitment. Egyptian nurses considering UK registration follow a clear NMC pathway, but the OET Writing requirement is a consistent challenge for those whose training and professional writing background is in Arabic.

The Egyptian Nursing Syndicate and what the NMC needs

The Egyptian Nursing Syndicate (ENS) is the professional body that registers nurses to practise in Egypt. Its headquarters are in Cairo, with local syndicates across the governorates. Egyptian-trained nurses register with the ENS after completing their nursing education.

For NMC registration, the ENS plays one specific role: it issues your certificate of current good standing. This document confirms that your Egyptian nursing registration is active and that no fitness-to-practise proceedings are pending or concluded against you.

The NMC needs three things, from three sources:

• Your original nursing qualification with transcripts, verified directly by your Egyptian training institution
• The ENS good-standing certificate
• Employment references covering your nursing practice history

These are separate documents. A delay in any one holds up the whole application, so it is worth requesting all three early.

Egypt as an NMC source country

Egypt is one of the established source countries for NHS international recruitment. NMC caseworkers regularly process Egyptian qualifications and are familiar with the ENS verification route. This familiarity tends to make the documentation stage more predictable than for countries the NMC assesses less often.

Many Egyptian nurses also have Gulf experience, having worked in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, or Oman. That experience strengthens an application’s clinical evidence, but the Gulf licence does not replace the Egyptian qualification and ENS good-standing certificate the NMC requires.

OET in Egypt

OET test venues operate in Cairo. The test is computer-based. Dates are available through the year; confirm current availability on the official OET website.

The four sub-tests and the NMC requirement:

One distinction matters for Egyptian nurses with Gulf experience: some Gulf licensing authorities accept OET with a lower writing grade (for example C+). The NMC does not. UK registration requires Grade B in all four sub-tests, and Writing is held to the same standard as the rest.

Why Arabic-medium training changes OET Writing preparation

Most Egyptian nursing programmes are delivered in Arabic. This means many Egyptian nurses have strong clinical knowledge but limited practice producing formal clinical correspondence in English. OET Writing tests exactly that: a clinical letter from case notes, scored across six criteria (see the OET writing criteria hub).

The two criteria where Arabic-trained nurses most consistently fall below Band 5:

Genre and Style: Arabic formal writing favors elaborate courtesy formulas and ornate phrasing. OET Writing rewards direct professional register. An opening like “I humbly write to bring to the attention of your esteemed expertise…” is a register problem, not a vocabulary problem.

Language: Arabic lacks an indefinite article and uses a binary aspect system rather than English tenses. This produces persistent article errors and mixed tenses in OET scripts.

Egypt to NMC registration: the steps

1. Start your NMC application online, selecting Egypt as your training country.
2. Request qualification verification from your Egyptian nursing institution, sent directly to the NMC.
3. Request your ENS certificate of current good standing.
4. Complete OET in Cairo and achieve Grade B in all four sub-tests.
5. Pass the NMC CBT (Computer-Based Test) through Pearson VUE.
6. Receive your NMC decision — conditional registration pending OSCE.
7. Travel to the UK and pass the OSCE at an NMC-approved test centre for full registration.

Egypt to UK: a realistic timeline

Nurses who need targeted OET Writing preparation should budget toward the upper end of the preparation range. Reaching Grade B on the first OET sitting is faster overall than taking two or three attempts.
