OET for Oman Nurses: UK and Australia Registration in 2026

Oman employs a substantial international nursing workforce across its Ministry of Health and private hospitals. Nurses in Muscat and beyond typically hold an Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) or MOH licence alongside their original qualification, and are well positioned to pursue UK or Australian registration.

In short: The Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) license nurses to practise in Oman, usually after a DataFlow verification and Prometric exam. Neither the NMC nor AHPRA accepts the Oman licence as a substitute for your original nursing qualification. OET Grade B (350) in all four sub-tests is required for both regulators. OET is available at venues in the region including Muscat.

What the Oman licence is and is not

The Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) regulate healthcare licensing in Oman, with responsibility split by professional category. Foreign-educated nurses complete a DataFlow Primary Source Verification (PSV), then a Prometric examination, before a licence is issued.

When Oman-based nurses apply to the NMC, the error to avoid is assuming the Oman process carries over. It does not. The NMC needs:

  • Your original nursing qualification with transcripts, verified directly by your training institution
  • A certificate of current good standing from your home-country nursing regulator
  • Employment references for your practice history

Your Oman DataFlow report verified your documents for the OMSB. The NMC runs its own verification, directly with your institution, so you cannot reuse the Oman DataFlow report. Keep your original documents accessible — you will need them again for the NMC.

OET in Oman

OET is computer-based and delivered at test venues in the Gulf, including Muscat. Dates run through the year; confirm current venues on the official OET website.

The NMC and AHPRA hold Writing to the same Grade B standard as the other three sub-tests. Writing is where most preparation effort is needed.

NMC registration from Oman: the steps

  1. Start your NMC application online, selecting your training country (not Oman).
  2. Request qualification verification from your training institution, sent directly to the NMC.
  3. Request a certificate of current good standing from your home-country regulator.
  4. Complete OET and reach Grade B in all four sub-tests.
  5. Pass the NMC CBT through Pearson VUE.
  6. Receive NMC conditional registration pending OSCE.
  7. Travel to the UK and pass the OSCE for full registration.

AHPRA from Oman

For nurses targeting Australia, AHPRA generally requires an ANMAC skills assessment if you trained outside a recognised list of countries. ANMAC checks whether your qualification is comparable to an Australian nursing degree and takes three to four months. OET Grade B in all four sub-tests, less than three years old, is accepted as English evidence.

OET Writing preparation for Arabic-speaking nurses

Writing is the OET sub-test with the widest preparation gap for nurses who have practised in Arabic-language clinical settings. The clinical letter is scored across six criteria (see the OET writing criteria hub). The two criteria most often below Band 5 for Arabic speakers are Genre and Style (register) and Language (articles and tense).

These are structural transfer patterns from Arabic, each with a specific fix. The OET Writing for Arabic Speakers guide covers all five with before/after examples.

For the full scoring framework, see the OET writing criteria hub. The OET Writing for Arabic Speakers guide covers the five language patterns that affect Gulf-based Arabic-speaking nurses most. Frequently asked questions

Common questions on this topic — full answers below.

Does my OMSB or Oman MOH licence count for NMC registration?
No. The Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) license nurses to practise in Oman. The NMC needs your original nursing qualification from your training country and a certificate of current good standing from your home-country regulator. Your Oman licence and DataFlow verification do not replace either.
What OET score do nurses in Oman need for the NMC?
Grade B in all four sub-tests — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — which is 350 out of 500 each. The NMC and AHPRA both require Grade B across all four sub-tests for UK and Australian registration.
Is the DataFlow report I did for Oman useful for the NMC?
The DataFlow Primary Source Verification you completed for your OMSB or MOH licence verifies your documents for Oman. The NMC runs its own separate qualification verification directly with your training institution, so you cannot reuse the Oman DataFlow report for the NMC. Keep your original documents accessible, as you will need them again.
Where can nurses in Oman take the OET?
OET is computer-based and delivered at test venues in the Gulf region, including Muscat. Confirm current venues and dates on the official OET website, as availability changes through the year.
How long does it take to move from Oman to NMC registration?
Allow 12 to 18 months from starting OET preparation to NMC full registration. The main variables are OET attempt count, document verification from your home country, NMC processing time (currently 3 to 6 months), and the CBT and OSCE stages.
Which OET sub-test is hardest for nurses in Oman?
Writing. The clinical letter genre has six scoring criteria and differs from both Arabic professional writing and routine clinical English. Nurses who have practised mainly in Arabic-language settings need specific preparation for the register and structure OET Writing expects.
